Ion-induced emission of spin-polarized electrons to study surface magnetism
نویسندگان
چکیده
A novel technique, ion-induced, angleand energy-resolved, spin-polarized electron emission spectroscopy (SPEES) has been used to probe the electron spin polarization (ESP) at the surface of Ni(110) picture-frame single crystals which are well characterized using AES, LEED, RHEED and STM. The energy distribution of the emitted electrons (0-70eV), which includes spin-polarized Auger electrons, is significantly different from that of electron-induced secondary electrons and contains fundamental, spin-dependent information on the local surface magnetic structure of Ni(110).

The spin-polarized calculations in generalized gradient approximation density–functional theory (GGA–DFT) have been used to show how the existence of second metals can modify the atomic hydrogen adsorption on Au (100), Cu (100), and Pt (100) surfaces. The computed adsorption energies for the atomic hydrogen adsorbed at the surface coverage of 0.125 ML (monolayer) for the monometallic Au (100), ...

The electron spin polarization (ESP) at surfaces of bulk and thin film ferromagnetic materials has been investigated using electron capture spectroscopy (ECS), which probes the ESP of the topmost surface layer. At surfaces of PtMnSb, Tb and Fe,,B,,, we find nonhero ESP due to long-ranged or short-ranged ferromagnetic order. The sign of the ESP at surfaces of the Heusler alloy PtMnSb is in agree...

متن کاملLayer-dependent magnetic properties at Fe surfaces using spin-polarized electron emission spectroscopy (SPEES)
We have studied the angle-resolved energy distribution of spin-polarized electrons emitted during ion-surface scattering. At clean Fe surfaces, electron spin polarization values (ESP) of up to 48% are found. Varying the scattering angle of the ions from 1 ° to 45 °, we find that the layer-dependent, average ESP at the topmost surface layer is enhanced by 32% compared to that of the bulk and tha...
